What is ISTBar?ISTbar is a BHO, or browser helper object. It occurs in your system in the form of a toolbar for Internet Explorer. In theory, the program only sends you ads, but in reality, it does much more than that. In order to send you ads from affiliate sites, it watches your every move online. It takes over your internet browsing experience. Instead of getting the unbiased search results you may be looking for, you'll be directed to the sites ISTbar wants you to see. It updates itself and installs other programs without your knowledge or consent.The ISTbar is propagated by a Trojan Downloader whose sole purpose is to install the toolbar and its corresponding advertising. These Trojans are often given appellations such as Trojan-Downloader.Win32.IstBar, and they comprise an extensive family of so-called ISTbar Trojans, each of which install code along slightly different file paths and have different names for their executables. The Trojans themselves are usually contracted via an ActiveX, drive-by download on ISTbar affiliate sites, typically pornographic sites. It's called a "drive-by" because of the aggressive and forceful tactics it uses to get a passer-by to download the program, often not letting users close the download screen until they agree to install the bar.
